  5. #4 Best Places to Retire in AlabamaGulf ShoresTown in Alabama•Rating 4.27 out of 5 33 reviewsCurrent Resident: I am being asked to rate my experience with Gulf Shores, Alabama and the first word that comes to mind is "amazing" for many reasons, but there are a few that I can list. My first reason is the location and the closeness to other businesses like grocery stores, restaurants, hair and nail salons and much more. Second, the beautiful white beaches are just too beautiful to imagine. My family has lived on the Coast their whole life and it has been a vacation staple since I was born. The last thing is that we are a beach town and weather in the Summer can be difficult to navigate. It is important to be able to get off of the island as soon as you can should an evacuation order be issued. We live close to the one way out and that is of huge importance to me and to others that live here. Gulf Shores is my home and a beautiful place to live. I hope by my review above that you may want to visit too.... 7. #6 Best Places to Retire in AlabamaAlexandriaCurrent Resident: Alexandria, Alabama is a wonderful place to live! Of course, like any area, it has its flaws. It is general rural suburban living. Alexandria is a fairly quiet community, with the exception of live stock, and of course Pelham Range but, overtime you become accustom to the sounds. Otherwise I love the freedom of living out of the general city limits and doing as I wish on my property with little regulations.... 11. #10 Best Places to Retire in AlabamaVestavia HillsSuburb of Birmingham, AL•Rating 4.41 out of 5 51 reviewsFormer Resident: I grew up in Vestavia, the school system prepared me for college and provided a good foundation. The cities public services including recreational programs and facilities are fantastic. Most families have multiple cars so public transportation is essentially unavailable. My family, like most in VH, had money, but I was one of the fortunate kids because my parents didn’t spoil me. Too many parents let their kids have anything they want in VH. They really give the city a bad rap outside of the bubble. I always get dirty looks when I tell people where I went to HS because of the status and reputation Vestavia holds. Also, the high school has a serious drug problem that seems to be overlooked by everyone, maybe that’s just how it is everywhere though. For the most part Vestavia is a safe, quiet, and convenient place to raise a family (if you are in the right tax bracket). I recommend moving to Vestavia as long as you know the negative aspects. The positive outweighs the negative in VH.... 26. #24 Best Places to Retire in AlabamaCowartsCurrent Resident: I love living in a small town. Everyone helps everyone! I love having my family close to me even my husbands family is close by. We are all one big community. We are not far from the nearest bigger city. My daughter goes to a great school near by and loves it. This is her first year there and she has made a lot of great friends there so far and it is a Christian school also! I love that she can learn about the Lord while also going to school. That does mean that she does not go to a public school but that does not mean that the public schools are not great here. They are top notch. I love the job my husband has to where he can be home when he wants to be, he makes his own schedule. I also love that we now have our niece living with us. She is 18 and in school herself but is trying to save money so she is staying with us. Which also means we have a house full and it is chaotic but we would not have it any other way.
