Are Eyeglasses Tax Deductible?

“Tax deductible” refers to income that cannot be taxed. On its own, prescription eyewear is not tax deductible. But don’t lose hope — the IRS has stipulated that in 2022, medical devices (such as prescription glasses or sunglasses) and treatments can be tax deductible if your out-of-pocket annual expenses are more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI).

For example, if your AGI is $50,000, your total medical expenses for the year (spouse and dependents also count toward this) would need to exceed $3,750 to be tax deductible. So, if aside from prescription eyewear, you plan to spend money on eye exams and other medical procedures, save all your bills and receipts for tax season.

Tax Free Eyewear

If you don’t plan to spend more than 7.5% of your AGI on glasses and other medical procedures, know that prescription eyewear should be tax free. “Tax free” refers to no added sales tax when you purchase eyeglasses or prescription sunglasses, regardless of which state you’re in. When you buy from SportRx, shipping is also free for US orders, so you’re only paying for your sunglasses (and all those awesome lens upgrades).

Using FSA/HSA on Prescription Eyewear

While not tax deductible, you may also use a flex account to pay for eyeglasses or prescription sunglasses. FSA and HSA accounts are considered pre-tax money, which means the money in these accounts is not counted toward your gross income. With HSAs in particular, money can be set aside and remain there year after year, to use whenever you need.

SportRx has some other FSA & HSA advice blogs, so read our guide on FSA/HSA Eligible Eyewear for more tips on how to get the most out of your flex dollars.
