A change of address does not require an in-person visit to a DMV office. Have both your old and new addresses handy. If changing the address for your vehicle or boat/vessel, you will also need your most recent registration card and the address where your vehicle or boat/vessel is located.

It is likely that your usps.com® profile is not updated with your current address. The best way to prevent this issue is to submit an Official Change of Address online at moversguide.usps.com, in person at a Post Office™, or through your carrier.

Look out for Change of Address scam sites

The big difference? They can charge up to $179.95 to do something that only costs $1.10. Before you start entering your information, double check that the URL shows either USPS.com or MYMOVE.com, an authorized affiliate of the Postal Service.

USPS.com will never charge you $40 to change your address. However, websites with similar domain names or names that appear to be associated with the Postal Service may charge customers up to $40 for a change of address. In many cases, the customer's change of address is never even made.

A resident temporarily living in a different state for school or work may want to forward mail to a domicile address. But someone who isn't the owner of a home or apartment must ask for permission. If permission is not requested and granted, that person is committing address fraud and maybe even mail fraud [*].

How long does it take for a new address to be recognized? In general, a change of address takes seven to 10 business days from the date that you initially registered the change for your home or company.

Look for spelling errors. Sometimes it may just be some numbers that were not added in the right order, or some misspelled word is in place. Make sure you are not in a PO Box Postal Area.
