Fastest 5,000 runs in ODI cricket: Hashim Amla tops the list (2024)
As many as three West Indies players feature in the top 10 list for fastest 5,000 runs in ODI cricket.

Former South Africa batter Hashim Amla holds the record for the fastest 5,000 runs in ODI cricket. Amla reached the milestone in just his 101st innings in January 2015 in the first ODI during the West Indies’ tour of South Africa.
The opening batter scored 66 runs in as many deliveries in the match as the Proteas won by 61 runs through D/L method.
Hashim Amla made his ODI debut for South Africa in March 2008 against Bangladesh and while his initial outings were a bit underwhelming, he settled into 50-over international cricket after scoring his first half-century in November 2008 against Kenya. From that point on, there was no looking back.
The year 2010 was one of the finest of his ODI career as he scored four half-centuries and five tons. Two of those five centuries came against Zimbabwe in back-to-back ODIs while the other three were against West Indies twice and Pakistan.
By the time he got to the 5000-run mark, Amla had scored 17 centuries, which amounts to more than 60 per cent of his total career hundreds (27) in the 50-over format.
Amla’s record of breaching the 5000-run mark in ODI cricket in 101 innings puts him ahead of players like former West Indies captain Vivian Richards and former Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli, both of whom took 114 innings to reach the landmark.
Vivian Richards did so while playing against England in January 1987, whereas Kohli achieved the landmark against West Indies in November 2013. Interestingly, it took Kohli just five years and 95 days to reach 5000 runs in ODIs.
Meanwhile, the likes of David Warner and Joe Root complete the top five list for fastest players to 5000 ODI runs.
The Australia opener took 10 years and 361 days to breach the landmark in his 115th ODI innings, which was against India in January 2020. Former England captain Root crossed the 5000-run mark in his 116th ODI innings in February 2019 against West Indies.

has become the fastest player to reach 5000 runs in the ODI format. He crossed the 5000 run-mark in 97 innings. Babar broke Hashim Amla's record of scoring 5000 runs in 101 innings.
This is Azam's 97th innings in 99 one-day internationals, improving on Amla's feat of reaching the milestone in 101 innings from 104 matches. Last year he narrowly missed equalling Amla's record for fastest 4,000 ODI runs in 81 innings.
During this time he scored three centuries and as many half centuries. Rounding out the top three was India's hotshot Shubman Gill. After his double century in the first ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023, Gill became the fastest Indian to score 1000 ODI runs.
He made his international debut in 2008, and it took him 81 innings to achieve this milestone. He finished his career as one of the most incredible batters of this format of the game. In an ODI match against India in 2013 at Durban, he smashed a century and became the fastest player to score 4000 runs.
David Warner: Fastest player to score 5000 runs in IPL
While Suresh Raina was the first player to reach 5000 runs in the IPL, swashbuckling Australian opener David Warner was the fastest batsman in IPL to tally 5000 runs.
In Tests, Misbah-ul-Haq has the most wins as a captain with 26 wins in 56 matches, followed by Imran Khan (14/48). In terms of W/L, Javed Miandad was the best (minimum 10 wins), with a W/L of 2.33. In ODIs, Imran Khan has the most wins, 75 in 139, followed by Wasim Akram (66 in 109).
Babar Azam requires 4,420 runs in the next 99 innings to shatter Virat Kohli's record. If one considers his current average of 55.94, Azam could easily break this record. It will be interesting to see if the Pakistan captain could better Kohli's achievement.
