Midwife Job Description, Main Duties, and Responsibilities

As a midwife, you will be responsible for dealing with pregnant women, providing them with suitable and appropriate care and advice based on their particular needs. You will, more often than not, be the lead healthcare professional for the duration of their pregnancy and discuss with them the options and services that are available throughout. It is a role that requires a unique set of skills and qualities to perform to the necessary standards.

Key midwife duties and responsibilities include:

  • Providing full antenatal care, screening, examinations and arranging parenting classes;
  • Monitoring women during the antenatal stage and also providing support during the labor and birth stages;
  • Being the expert on childbirth and identifying those mothers who are most at risk or who are vulnerable;
  • Liaising with other members of the midwifery team and healthcare professionals to ensure the highest standards of care are provided at all times;
  • Teaching new and expectant mothers how to care for their new-born child and also educate them on best practice in respect of feeding and bathing.
  • Provide emotional support as and when required and demonstrate empathy towards parents during difficult births;
  • When pregnancies and births do not go to plan, you will need to provide the appropriate levels of empathy and support as needed based on the circ*mstances;
  • Maintain and keep accurate records and information;
  • Offer advice and support during extremely upsetting and distressing situations such as neonatal abnormalities, miscarriage, stillbirth and termination.
  • Liaise with healthcare professionals and community midwives to ensure the duty of care is transferred during the postnatal stages.

You will be expected to work with, and provide care for, mothers from diverse backgrounds and circ*mstances and the level of midwifery care you provide must be consistent to a very high standard in line with the trust’s or hospitals code of conduct.

TIP #1 – The only way to operate as a midwife is to the highest standards of professionalism and care. During your interview, provide specific examples you have been in, previously, where you have already demonstrated a commitment to outstanding midwifery practice.

During your answers to the midwife interview questions, demonstrate your ability to incorporate full and inclusive care and advice whilst looking after mothers and partners whom are under your remit.

TIP #3 – In preparation for your midwife interview, be ready for three different types of interview questions: motivational questions (why you want to become a midwife and what you have to offer); research-based interview questions (what you have done to research the role and the hospital/organization you are applying to work for), situational/behavioural-type questions (when you have previously demonstrated competence in the assessable areas of a midwife.

TIP #4 – It is very important you provide SPECIFIC examples of when you have already carried out similar duties and responsibilities to that of a midwife within your answers to the interview questions.
