Does the U.S. Senate still have pages? ›

Today's pages, appointed and sponsored by a senator, must be high school juniors, at least 16 years old, and attend school. Senate page duties consist primarily of delivery of correspondence and legislative material within the Capitol complex.

U.S. Senate Page Program

Pages are paid an annual salary basis of $35,360. Since pages serve for less than a year, they do not earn an entire annual salary. Senate Pages must be sponsored by a Senator. Each session, only 30 positions are available in the U.S. Senate which support its 100 Senators.

Article I, section 5 of the United States Constitution provides that "Each House [of Congress] may determine the Rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two-thirds, expel a member." Since 1789 the Senate has expelled only 15 members.

Page positions are highly competitive. Only 30 page positions are offered each session among all 100 senators. Because of this, not all senators are able to sponsor a page.

The application process differs between senators' offices, but commonly requires a letter of interest from the prospective page, an official transcript, and letters of recommendation from teachers, mentors, or supervisors. Application deadlines for each session vary by each office.

There are four sessions of the Senate Page Program. The Fall session runs from early September through mid-January. The spring session runs from mid-January through mid-June. The summer includes two sessions which run three to four weeks long.
