That’s a good question! We’re always interested in the size of our vehicle, but when it comes time to park it – quite soon, in fact – how big should a parking space be?
5 m x 2.30 m: standard parking space size
The standard size of a perpendicular (side-by-side) parking space is 5 m long by 2.30 m wide.
There are also a variety of standard sizes for “angle” parking spaces (depending on the angle of the spaces) or for parallel parking spaces. For the latter (vehicles are parked bumper to bumper), the standard size is also 5 m x 2.30 m., except when there is a wall: on the driver’s side, the space must be 5 m x 2.50 m; on the passenger’s side, the space may be just 5 m x 2 m. Please note that in underground parking facilities, depending on the age of construction and configuration, these parking space sizes may vary.
Special dimensions for PRM
Spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility (PRM) are special: they must be 5 m x 3.30 m and be marked with a specific pictogram, except when they are along a crosswalk, for example, where they may be just 5 m x 2.30 m.
What about height dimensions?
The height of the parking facilities varies and is duly indicated at the entrances. It is better not to play with the limits thinking that “I can get through”: unpleasant surprises are expensive: in addition to the damage caused to your vehicle, you will also be liable for any damage to the parking facility.
