UTR stands for Unique Taxpayer Reference. Your UTR is a unique10-digitnumber that identifies you to HMRC. It's sometimes referred to as "Taxpayer Number"or just “Tax Reference”. Everyone using Self Assessment should have one.
Note that you cannot submit a tax return without your UTR. It's important! You cancheck the format of your UTR with untied here.
What do I need it for?
You need a UTR to complete your tax return.You'll also need to quote this number if contacting HMRC. When accessing HMRC online services, you’ll often alsoneed your Government Gateway user ID – but that's a different reference! – see our related article below.
To submit your tax return from the untied app,you will need to enter your UTR number along with your Government Gateway ID(but you can use untied express submit if you don’t have your Government Gateway/login details to hand).
Where do I get a UTR from?
Your UTR number is assigned automatically by HMRC when you register for Self Assessment.
Once you get your UTR number it stays with you for life!
If you aren't yet registered for Self Assessment you will need to do so if you need to submit a tax return. untied can register you with HMRC here - it's free if you have a paid untied account :-).
I'm registered with HMRC. Where do I find my UTR?
If you're already registered you'll find it in one of the following places:
- In your 'welcome to Self Assessment' letter (SA250)
- In your Self Assessment tax return
- In your notice to file a tax return
- In your 'Statement of Account' and payment reminders
You can also request a reminder here (again included in paid untied accounts).
If all this fails and you have forgotten or lost your UTR, then you should contact HMRC.
