In addition to the above, from my experience the project success criteria provides clarity, from the project onset, on the main drivers of the project to all key stakeholders and forms the basis for stakeholder alignment which is imperative to manage and control effective stakeholder engagement and stakeholder ownership. A well defined success criteria supports project monitoring and control, and hence on time, within budget delivery as well as meeting the business case/investment case objectives

I think it’s important to consider having multiple success metrics. I was taught that 5-9 metrics is a solid target because it allows for evaluating success across many channels while not being a too diluted.

One strategy for improving project success metrics is to pay attention to metrics you are always “green” in. The metric category may be appropriate but making the target more challenging can make it more meaningful. Overall just be wary of making metrics too easy to achieve.
