In Mexico, basic education is normally divided in three steps: primary school (primaria), comprising grades 1–6; junior high school (secundaria), comprising grades 7–9; and high school (preparatoria), comprising grades 10–12.
In Mexico, the twelfth grade is the last year of high school, where students are normally aged 17–18.
The majority of schools and universities in the Mexico use a ten-point grading system with corresponding numerical grades for academic work. Higher education in Mexico follows a similar format to universities in Europe and the US with bachelor's (licenciatura) degrees taking four years to complete, while master's (maestría) degrees last two years and a PhD (doctorado) is three years long.

How long is a school day in Mexico?
The school year in Mexico runs from late August to early July. School hours in private and public schools differ, but they normally start at 7:30-8:00 until around 13:30-14:30. Some schools also offer afternoon sessions (sesión vespertina) from 13:00 to 18:00 approximately.
High School is not mandatory in Mexico. Most preparatorias are found only in urban areas which makes education costly to those from rural areas. Approximately only 6% of the students that are of high school age attend a Preparatoria.

Most states' American system is the 5 – 3 – 4 system, while most Mexican schools follow the 6 – 3 – 3 system. In the American system, the students are supposed to undertake compulsory learning for a half-decade, then they are sent to the middle for the three years and four years of high school life.
The Mexican higher education system includes 2 levels: undergraduate (pregrado) and graduate (posgrado). The undergraduate level comprises University Higher Technician (Técnico Superior Universitario) or Professional Associate (Profesional Asociado) and Licentiate (Licenciatura) programs.
A GPA higher than 5.0 is rare, but school point systems are occasionally structured so that students taking advanced classes can rack up bonus points. One student even managed to land a stunning 10.03 GPA by taking 17 advanced classes at a school that awarded bonus points.
Students in an AP class with weighted grading receive a five-point weighted average for each of the four-letter grades: As, Bs, Cs, and Ds. As a result, a student who only takes AP classes and receives A's will have a 5.0 GPA.
Those course grades are typically weighted and are usually graded on a five-point scale instead of four points, so if you get a “B, it equates to a 4.0, and an “A” would give you a grade of 5.0. At some schools, honors classes and advanced placement courses would be figured on a 6.0 GPA format.

High schools, or senior high schools, are schools that span grades 9 or 10 through 12.
Basic education includes 3 years of compulsory preschool (preescolar), 6 years of primary (primaria) (Grades 1 to 6), and 3 years of secondary (secundaria) (Grades 7 to 9) school.
Mandatory school age is 6 to 14 years, which covers primary and lower secondary school. Elementary school is from grades one through six; lower secondary education is taught in three levels, from first to third grade.
