How do I check my bank refund status?

Phone help. Where's My Refund has the latest information on your return. If you don't have internet, call the automated refund hotline at 800-829-1954 for a current-year refund or 866-464-2050 for an amended return. For prior-year refunds, check Where's My Refund.
If you file a complete and accurate paper tax return, your refund should be issued in about six to eight weeks from the date IRS receives your return. If you file your return electronically, your refund should be issued in less than three weeks, even faster when you choose direct deposit.
If you have contacted the financial institution and two weeks have passed with no results, you will need to file Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund PDF to initiate a trace. This allows the IRS to contact the bank on your behalf to attempt recovery of your refund.

- Step 3: Enter the 'Captcha code' displayed on the screen.
- Step 4: Click on 'efile', select 'Income Tax Returns', and then choose 'View Filed Returns'.
After you file your federal income tax return and request direct deposit, you can check on status of the refund using the Where's My Refund tool on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go mobile app. Your refund status may be available as soon as 24 hours after the IRS receives your electronically filed tax return.
Refunds to debit cards tend to take between two and five business days, but it can take up to 30 days depending on the company issuing the refund.

The chargeback process lets you ask your bank to refund a payment on your debit card when a purchase has gone wrong. You should contact the seller first, as you cannot start a chargeback claim unless you have done this. Then, if you can't resolve the issue, get in touch with your bank.
Depending on the issuing bank or credit card company, it can take an average of 1-7 business days for these funds to show in their account, based on the issuer's settlement process. Credit card accounts typically take longer to display refunded transactions than debit card accounts.

The bank cannot issue an immediate refund as the request has to be authorized by the merchant first. Once the merchant approves your request, they will give their bank authorization to return the funds to your account.

Refunds take longer because of security measures in place to verify fraud. Banks don't make interest because they are not holding the money (in the same way that the money was either in your account or the merchant's). The exchange takes place in an automatic clearing house almost instantly.
An incomplete return, an inaccurate return, an amended return, tax fraud, claiming tax credits, owing certain debts for which the government can take part or all of your refund, and sending your refund to the wrong bank due to an incorrect routing number are all reasons that a tax refund can be delayed.

Checking the status of your direct deposit is as easy as viewing your account online, calling your credit union or bank, or visiting a local branch. Using your bank's resources, you can see if the money has been deposited into your checking or savings account, or if there's a pending deposit.
While a person can choose direct deposit whether they file their taxes on paper or electronically, a taxpayer who e-files will typically see their refund in less than 21 days. Taxpayers can track their refund using "Where's My Refund?" on IRS.gov or by downloading the IRS2Go mobile app.
Direct deposit to bank account: Direct deposit is when your tax refund is deposited into your bank account. This is the quickest refund method, and you might receive your refund within one to three weeks, depending on your filing method.
How long does it take for your bank to process a refund?
Under normal circumstances, it takes between five to seven business days for the specific funds from the purchase to be returned to your account, but this is subject to many factors. For every retailer who will issue a refund immediately, there will be another for whom the refund takes up to a month.

When you request a credit card refund, the merchant or retailer sends the refund to your credit card issuer first. Your credit card issuer then applies the refund to your statement or balance as a credit.
