Some fertility measures
Fertility measurement is therefore about producing rates that relate numbers of births to numbers of women. Of course babies may die, sometimes very soon after birth, but dealing with this is part of mortality measurement, not fertility measurement.
By far the most common, widely used and "accepted" measure of fertility is theTotal Fertility Rate (TFR). This is quite a complex measure but will be dealt with in depth. First we deal with some simpler measures.
The measures we present are as follows:
Crude Birth Rate | CBR |
Child Woman Ratio | C/W Ratio |
General Fertility Rate | GFR |
Age-specific Fertility Rates | ASFRs |
The Total Fertility Rate | TFR |
Parity Progression Ratios | PPRs |
