Systemwide upgrades can be used for one-way travel for up to 3 segments on American marketed and operated flights, British Airways marketed and operated flights, or British Airways operated flights marketed by American.

Long-haul international flights are the best use of systemwide upgrades because you can go from economy class (including basic economy if you're an AAdvantage elite) to business class, with its comfortable seats and elevated service, on a longer flight. Not all flights have seats available for systemwide upgrades.

When flying on American Airlines, you can use a systemwide upgrade for any of the following: To upgrade from economy or premium economy to business class. To upgrade from business class to first class. On domestic two cabin flights, you can use them to upgrade from economy to first class.

As you might expect, upgrades are prioritized by elite status. American Airlines invitation-only ConciergeKey members clear first, followed by Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro, Platinum and then finally Gold elites.

So, if you're flexible with your travel plans and willing to take a chance, upgrading to business class at the airport could save you some serious money.

Checking in early increases your chances of getting an upgrade from admin staff if the flight's overbooked.
