Battle[]

Ultima Buster has two arms that shield the body against physical attacks, and its head has the dangerous Contamination attack, which inflicts Poison (always), Zombie (always), Confuse, Full Break and Slow. Poison and Zombie can't be blocked, even with Ribbon. The arms and head each have 80,000 HP of their own. The arms will regenerate after the body gets either three or four turns with both arms dead.

Ultima Buster (Final Fantasy X) (1)

If the head is attacked between when it starts moving and when it uses Contamination, it will stop moving, and will not use Contamination. Unlike Sinspawn Gui, the head has a physical attack, though it uses the same animation as the body attacking. Ultima Buster's head and arms also will not give AP or gil when defeated.

The arms do not attack, but when present they give the body 255 Defense and the Armored and Defend statuses, regardless of whether there is one or two arms present. They do not protect the head, however.

It drops armor with the Break MP Limit ability, and weapons with the Overdrive → AP, Triple AP, and Triple Overdrive abilities; useful for doing the AP trick with Don Tonberry. Although a hidden stat, its equipment drops provide a 6% critical hit chance bonus instead of the usual 3% (this is relevant to weapons and armor pieces, but only to attacks that deal physical damage).

Strategy[]

Auto-Haste and Auto-Protect for all members helps.

If the party has good Magic stats, Doublecasting Ultima will do decent damage to all four of Ultima Buster's parts simultaneously. Whenever the head and both arms are destroyed, Wakka with his World Champion maxed should use Attack Reels and get x2 hit slots. Everyone can Entrust their Overdrives to Wakka to make short work of this battle. The head and arms should be destroyed first, otherwise they will take hits that could have struck the body instead.

Another tactic for quick victory (one that does not require grinding for Magic) is to kill the arms and head first (possibly with an all-hitting Overdrive such as Kimahri's Fire Breath or Aqua Breath), then use Quick Hits on the body, giving Ultima Buster fewer chances to attack. Whenever the arms regenerate, they should be killed again with Quick Hits before attacking the body again. All participating members should have maxed out Strength, Defense and Magic Defense (in case Ultima Buster uses Ultima), and at least 170 Agility.

Etymology[]

[view· edit· purge]Ultima means "the last" in Latin and many Latin-based languages. The word is an inflection of ultimus which is the superlative of ulter, which means "that is beyond". In the Spanish versions of many Final Fantasy games, the spell Ultima's name is written as "Artema", a close transliteration of the Japanese katakana.

[view· edit· purge]The word "buster" means a person who breaks up something, e.g. crime busters, or something big or unusual for its kind. It derives from the verb "bust".
