Lewis & Clark Young Marines uses military time quite often. This can be confusing for parents with no military experience. We have compiled some information that may help you.
Military time is based on a 24 hour clock. Our normal everyday clocks are 12 hour clocks and that’s why we use am & pm.
0000 & 2400 are actually considered to be the same time.
If you are told that your Young Marine needs to be at a specific place at 0930, that means they need to be there at 9:30 am. If you are told to pick your Young Marine up at 1745, that means you need to pick up at 5:45 pm. Note: For times greater than 1200, just subtract 1200 to get normal time, 1745-1200=545=5:45 pm normal time.
How To “speak” Military Time
Now that you know how to read it, you need to learn how to hear and speak it. Any time that starts with a “zero” is spoken that way. For example, 0100 (1 am) is spoken “zero-one hundred” or “zero-one hundred hours”. If there are minutes such as 0230 (2:30 am), it’s spoken “zero-two-thirty”.
Times from 1000-2400 with no minutes, such as 1000 (10 am), are spoken “ten-hundred” or “ten-hundred hours”. It’s the “hours + hundred”.
Times from 1000-2300 with minutes, such as 1345 (1:45 pm) is spoken “thirteen-forty five”.
To convert military time to regular time, you just need to subtract 12 from any time that's greater than 12:00 PM. For example, let's say you want to convert 16:30 hours (military time) to regular time. Since 16 is greater than 12, you need to subtract 12 from 16, which gives you 4.
For a military time that is larger than 12:00, just subtract 12 hours to get the 24 hour(standard time), then add “pm”. For example, if you have 14:30 hours, subtract 12 hours and the result is 2:30 pm. If the military time is less than or equal to 12:00, simply add “am”.
Military time is the same as regular time in the morning hours. Add a leading zero if the time is earlier than 10 am. For example, 9:30 am is 0930 in military time. If the time is after 12:59 pm, remove the colon and add 12 hours to the regular time.
To help you memorize faster, remember that times from midnight until 12:59 a.m. begin with 00. To make converting times from 1:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. easier, just add 12 to the normal hour number. For example, 2:44 p.m. would be 1444 (“fourteen forty-four”) because 2 + 12 = 14.
For the noon hour, simply add “PM” to the end of the 24-hour time to make it 12-hour time. So, for example, 12:45 would become 12:45 PM. Subtract 12 from 13:00 to 23:59 and include “PM.” For the hours after noon, subtract 12 hours from the 24-hour time.
To convert military time to standard time, take the number of hours and subtract 12. For example, 1300 = 13 hours. Take 13 – 12, which equals one or 1:00 p.m. For 1400, it's 14 – 12, which equals two, or 2:00 p.m. Keep in mind this only applies to time after 1200 hours.

Military minutes are the same as decimal minutes. Convert to decimal minutes by dividing any number of minutes by 60. For example, to find how many military (or decimal) minutes are equal to 10 regular clock minutes, do the math for 10 divided by 60.
Standard times 12:01 AM to 12:59 AM — remove the colon, then subtract 12 from the number designating the hours. In the end, remove AM/a.m. Standard times 1:00 AM to 9:59 AM — add a zero before the first digit, remove the colon, and remove the AM/a.m.
The easiest way to tell military time is to add 12 to all hours past noon. For example, to get 1 p.m. in military time, add 12 + 1 = 13. Military time would be 1300 hundred hours.
So 1:00 a.m. is the same in both military and civilian time. This holds true all the way up to 12:59 p.m. For everything after 12:59 p.m., just add 12 to the hours. For example, 2:00 p.m. becomes 14:00 (12+2=14), and 10:00 p.m. becomes 22:00 (10+12=22).
Converting time from a 12-hour clock to a 24-hour clock
For example, 9:00AM (12-hour) equals 9:00 (24-hour). To work out the 24-hour reading of an afternoon time (PM), you must add 12 to the hour shown on a 12-hour clock. For example, 1:00 PM (12-hour) would become 13:00 (24-hour).
24 hours is equal to 1 day. Thus, If it's 8:25 A.M right now., then after 24 hours (after 1 day) it will be exactly the same 8:25 A.M. Therefore, if the time right now is 8:25 A.M., then after 24 hours it will be the same, that is 8:25 am.
To convert time to a number of hours, multiply the time by 24, which is the number of hours in a day. To convert time to minutes, multiply the time by 1440, which is the number of minutes in a day (24*60). To convert time to seconds, multiply the time time by 86400, which is the number of seconds in a day (24*60*60 ).

To convert military time to standard time in Google Sheets, simply select your cells, use the Format menu, choose Number > More Formats > More date and time formats, and apply a 12-hour format.
